Jesus got the Ten Commandments wrong

(Mark 10:19 NIV) You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'"

On p 48 of EBE Dennis McKinsey says that "do not defraud" is not one of the Ten Commandments and that Jesus only lists five of the commandments.

Also in Biblical Errancy Pamphlets by Dennis McKinsey Pamphlet 2 Q18.

The ten commandments are in two parts the first four apply to God and the last six apply to our neighbor.

  1. (Exo 20:1-17 NIV) And God spoke all these words: {2} "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. {3} "You shall have no other gods before me.
  2. {4} "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. {5} You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, {6} but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
  3. {7} "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
  4. {8} "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. {9} Six days you shall labor and do all your work, {10} but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. {11} For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
  5. {12} "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
  6. {13} "You shall not murder.
  7. {14} "You shall not commit adultery.
  8. {15} "You shall not steal.
  9. {16} "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
  10. {17} "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Jesus then refers to the sixth (do not murder), seventh (do not commit adultery), eighth (do not steal), ninth (do not give false testimony), then do not defraud, then last of all the fifth commandment (honor your father and mother). He omits to mention the first four commandments that refer to our relationship to God. He has substituted defraud for coveting, fraud is a manifestation of coveting (EBC).

In the Matthew and Luke parallels the reference to "do not covet" is missing entirely:

(Mat 19:18-19 NIV) "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, "'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, {19} honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'"

(Luke 18:20 NIV) You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'"

So Jesus does not quote the first four laws that refer to God and either alludes to "do not covet" by substituting "do not defraud" or omits "do not covet" altogether. So what is going on? If we look at the complete passage we find that the man had great wealth. Jesus tells him that he lacks one thing (to inherit eternal life) and he is to sell everything, give it to the poor and to follow him. The man's problem is that the man loves his money more than God, in fact money is his God which is why Jesus does not mention the first four commandments, and this is likely reason he does not mention coveting (the man was not guilty of fraud).

(Mark 10:17-22 NIV) As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" {18} "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. {19} You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'" {20} "Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy." {21} Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." {22} At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
