Paul said Jesus was wrong about baptizing?
In 1 Cor. 1:17 ("For Christ sent me [Paul]
not to baptize but to preach the gospel) Paul said Jesus was wrong when
he said in Matt. 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing
them.... So how could Jesus be the fountain of wisdom?
Biblical Errancy
Pamphlets by Dennis McKinsey Pamphlet 2 Q7.
Here are the verses:
(Mat 28:18-20 NIV) Then Jesus came to them and
said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. {19}
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, {20} and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to
the very end of the age."
(1 Cor 1:11-17 NIV) My brothers, some from
Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. {12} What
I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I
follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas "; still another,
"I follow Christ." {13} Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for
you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? {14} I am thankful that I did not
baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, {15} so no one can say that you
were baptized into my name. {16} (Yes, I also baptized the household of
Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) {17}
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not
with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
We can get a little more background data from Paul's visit as described in
Acts:
(Acts 18:1-5 NIV) After this, Paul left Athens
and went to Corinth. {2} There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of
Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because
Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, {3} and
because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them. {4}
Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.
{5} When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself
exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.
(Acts 18:11 NIV) So Paul stayed for a year and a half,
teaching them the word of God.
I am frankly surprised that McKinsey raises this an objection at all, it
really does not seem to be a difficulty to me. We need to note the following
points:
Mat 28:18-20 is usually known by Christians as "the
Great Commission", it is Jesus final instructions to the disciples before
leaving this earth. It is a general command to the church as made
to the disciples and consists of three parts.
- go and make disciples of all nations
- baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit
- and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you
While Paul was in Corinth he reasoned with both Jews and
Gentiles that Jesus was the Christ, but when Silas and Timothy arrived he was
able to devote himself fully to preaching and to teaching, leaving the task of
baptising to Silas and Timothy. We should also note that God has instituted
various offices within the church (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and
teachers), not everyone is an evangelist or a teacher etc. There isn't an
office of baptizer because anyone of the above could baptise a new convert.
(Eph 4:11 NIV) It was he who gave some to be
apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors
and teachers,
Paul's call came directly from the Lord.
Paul was called to be an apostle (Rom 1:1 ). His call came
directly from the Lord and is described several times in Acts: 9:15;
18:9; 22:15; 26:16. The Lord Jesus specifically spoke to Paul in Corinth.
(Acts 18:9-10 NIV) One night the Lord spoke to
Paul in a vision: "Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent.
{10} For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I
have many people in this city."
Thus when Paul say's "For Christ did not send me to
baptize, but to preach the gospel" he is referring to his direct call
personally from the Lord Jesus. His main duty was to speak to the people
i.e. preach, not to baptise.
