The Prophets failed to discern the two comings of Jesus
The OT Prophets failed to discern the two comings of Jesus,
they did not see a two thousand year gap in between. They predicted that the
Messiah would come as the suffering servant (Isa 42:1) and the king. Jesus
fulfilled the suffering servant prophecies at his first coming and will fulfil
the kingly prophecies at his Second Coming. This is sometimes known as a
prophetic perspective, like viewing a mountain from a distance. As you come
closer to the mountain you see two peaks separated by a valley. The failure of
the prophets can be explained by the progressive revelation of scripture. It
was Jesus himself who first spoke of his Second Coming (Mat 24:30). This is
really only a bible difficulty if you assume that God dictated a detailed
description of future history. Clearly he gave Isaiah a few glimpses into the
future but left it to Jesus to give a more complete version.
A good example of the prophetic perspective is Joel 2:28-32
(Joel 2:28-32 NIV) 'And afterward, I will pour
out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old
men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. {29} Even on my
servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. {30} I
will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows
of smoke. {31} The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before
the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. {32} And everyone who
calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the
LORD calls.
The first part of the prophecy was fulfilled at Pentecost
(Acts 2:16-21 NIV) No, this is what was spoken
by the prophet Joel: {17} "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my
Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men
will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. {18} Even on my servants,
both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will
prophesy. {19} I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth
below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. {20} The sun will be turned to
darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day
of the Lord. {21} And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be
saved.'
However the second part of the prophecy also mentions cosmic signs that will
not appear until the Second Coming. We should note that the "last
days" started at Pentecost.
