Who killed Jesus, Jews or Gentiles?

On p 309 of EBE Dennis McKinsey complains that Jesus incorrectly prophesied who would kill him. Matt 20:19, Mark 10:33 and Luke 18:32-33 clearly show that Jesus predicted he would be killed by the Gentiles. But it is equally clear in John 19:14-18 that he was killed by the Jews. So Jews and Gentiles are both responsible.

Jesus prophesied that he would be killed by Gentiles:

(Mat 20:18-19 NIV) "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death {19} and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!"

(Mark 10:33 NIV) "We are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,

(Luke 18:31-33 NIV) Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. {32} He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him, spit on him, flog him and kill him. {33} On the third day he will rise again."

Here, according to McKinsey, Jesus is killed by Jews:

(John 19:14-18 NIV) It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews. {15} But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. {16} Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. {17} Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). {18} Here they crucified him, and with him two others--one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

The point is that McKinsey fails to see is that only the Romans could execute a man as John 18:31 points out.

(John 18:31 NIV) Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." "But we have no right to execute anyone," the Jews objected.

So the soldiers involved in John 19:16 would be Roman soldiers.

Both Mat 20:19 and Luke 18:32 say that Jesus will be handed over to the Gentiles who will mock, flog and kill him. Those who did these things were Roman soldiers:

(Mat 27:26-31 NIV) Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. {27} Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. {28} They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, {29} and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said. {30} They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. {31} After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

(Mark 15:15-20 NIV) Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. {16} The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. {17} They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. {18} And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" {19} Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. {20} And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

McKinsey gets one thing right both Jews and Gentiles are implicated in the death of Jesus, who died for the whole world.

There is another deeper answer to this question, who killed Jesus.

(Isa 53:4 NIV) Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.

(Isa 53:10 NIV) Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

(Acts 2:23 NIV) This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
